Namaqualand Hiking

Hiking opportunities abound in the area, but few hiking trails are actually well-marked.

A guide or a detailed map - or both - are imperative. Because of the arid nature of the region, always carry water and rather hike in the cooler months from May to October.

The following hiking trails actually got names and are worth a second look (and hike)!:

Ian Meyers:

• in the Goegap Nature Reserve outside Springbok
• two short day routes - respectively, 6 and 12 km and a wilderness trail where hikers can plan their own trail.

Pofadder:

• close to Pella, is a strenuous 4 - day hike, but the views are worth the effort.

Rooiberg:

• east of Garies, is the highest mountain in the Northern Cape.
• A relatively strenuous 3 day hike with overnight facilities in a cave and a matjieshuis!

Skaaprivier:

• near Nababeep - a relatively easy 2 - day hike in a canyon.
• Hike the last outpost on routes without names (and even if they do have names, don't bet that they will be clearly marked!)
